2018 Year-end Must-See Movies
December 19, 2018
The year might be coming to a close but there are still a lot of excellent movies coming to the big screen before 2018 ends. From your home in the apartments for rent in Davis, CA, Regal Cinemas and the Davis Varsity Theater are only a few minutes away. Here’s what you can look forward to in December.
1. Creed 2
This smash hit is in theaters right now, and its reviews are through the roof. The story picks up where Creed left off, giving you a deeper insight into Adonis Creed’s character. The movie takes follows Adonis in and out of the ring as he tries to build his legacy. This time around, the boxer takes on Ivan Drago’s son in an epic match.
2. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Continuing the Harry Potter prequel series, Fantastic Beasts has everything a fan of the series will love. If you’ve never watched any of these movies, then catching the first installment before heading out to the theater is highly recommended. However, you don’t have to watch the original Harry Potter series to enjoy these prequels (but it helps).
3. Green Book
Viggo Mortensen plays an anger-driven Italian that’s hired to drive around a classical pianist between gigs. The issue is that these gigs take place in the South during the racially charged 1960’s, which makes things difficult for the duo since the pianist is black. Inspired by true story, the movie delivers and excellent message on the importance of racial equality.
4. Mortal Engines
Whether you read the book by Philip Reeve or not, there’s a lot to look forward to when Mortal Engines hits theaters on December 11th. First, the movie is directed by Christian Rivers who is best known for his work in the Lord of the Rings series, including The Hobbit. Second, it’s a post-apocalyptic/sci-fi world where cities are now placed on giant robotic wheels as they fight one another. Third, London is out to destroy and conquer what remains of humanity. It’s the perfect movie cocktail.
5. The Mule
Also hitting theaters on December 11th is The Mule, starring and directed by Clint Eastwood. His character is a 90-year-old with a knack for horticulture that turns into a Mexican cartel drug mule. As you might expect, selling drugs for dangerous criminals isn’t a joyride. If you’re an Eastwood fan, then you’ll love his performance.
Superhero films have been topping the box office charts for years now, but the DC Comics universe is unveiling a fresh take on their aquatic hero. Starring Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Stargate: Atlantis, Conan 3D), this rugged actor delivers an intense performance as James Wan’s redefined Aquaman.
7. Mary Poppins Returns
Disney has numerous hits coming out next month, but most fans are excited over the return of Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt stars as the iconic nanny in this long overdue follow-up to the original film. Backed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth, it’s bound to break the box office.
8. Holmes & Watson
The duo from Step Brothers and Talladega Nights return to deliver another dose of their unique brand of comedy. This time Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly play as Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Watson in what’s sure to be a ridiculously great time. Opening on Christmas Day, you might just have the perfect reason to leave family dinner early.
9. Stan & Ollie
John C. Reilly had a busy year in 2018, with Stan & Ollie being his second film to hit theaters next month. He and Steve Coogan tell the tale of legendary comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. From 1927 to 1951, this dynamic duo pumped out silent and feature films that left America in stitches. The film pays homage to both, as well as the craft of comedy.
Nicole Kidman is an undercover cop gone rogue, anxiously trying to correct something after a sting operation took a turn for the worse. As the film unfolds, it shifts between present day and the past to piece this gritty story together.
Paramount has decided to make its first Transformers spinoff, giving fans the origin of the character Bumblebee. Hailee Steinfeld plays a teen who comes across this Autobot in the late 1980’s. It’s a unique part of the franchise with plenty of action, and something fans of the series will not want to miss.
Widows is Steve McQueen’s first studio movie, and it’s filled with stellar names from Liam Neeson to Michelle Rodriguez. After a police shootout proves fatal for four bank robbers, their wives are left widowed in Chicago. Instead of giving their significant others a wealthy life, the thieves have only left them with surmounting debt. So, one of the wives (played by Viola Davis) gets the other three on board with pulling off the heist their husbands failed. With a surprise end you would never see coming, it’s a must watch thriller.
