Davis Holiday Celebration
November 15, 2018
The holidays are almost here, and there’s no better way to bring in this joyous time of year than the Downtown Davis Holiday Celebration. For the 37th year in a row, the entire area will be delighted with sparkling lights, an elaborate parade, and plenty of entertainment. From the apartments for rent in Davis, CA, you have a front row seat to this spectacular event.
When and Where
The Downtown Davis Holiday Celebration takes place on Thursday, November 29th this year. The parade begins at the Davis Food Coop on 620 G Street, leading towards the tree lighting at the E Street Plaza. Everything starts at 6:00 p.m. sharp, with the tree lighting taking place at 6:30 p.m.
Numerous forms of entertainment take place between 6:30 and 8:30 that evening (more on that below), with everything wrapping up around 10:00 that night. There’s no cost to attend the event, either. If you have any questions, contact Bob Bowen via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As for parking, the best place is behind Signature Stadium 5 Theaters on the corner of 4th and G streets. The Food Co-Op lot will not offer parking for the night, so take that into consideration in case the theater lot it full.
What to Expect
There’s a lot going on at this annual event that adults and children alike can enjoy. The main attractions are the Candlelight Parade and the Holiday Tree Lighting. As one of the city of Davis’ oldest traditions, they draw in quite the crowd.
The Main Event
The annual parade is sponsored by the Davis Food Co-op, which has made this event possible for more than two decades. Participants get ready to walk at the co-op building located at 620 G Street. Decorated wagons, bicycles, stroller
s and more will move through the streets as they light up the town.
Children participating in the parade will receive a candle and safety drip cup to carry with them, giving them the chance to fully be a part of this parade. Plus, the drip cup gives parents one less thing to worry about. Anyone can participate in the event, so feel free to pick up a candle and join in.
The parade makes its way to E Street Plaza, where the community watches as a giant tree is illuminated by members of the Davis City Council to kick off the rest of the night’s festivities. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be there to greet guests, horse-drawn carriages offer rides, and live music keep the party going.
Santa Meet and Greet
At 6:40 p.m., jolly St. Nick makes his grand appearance at the E Street Salon with Mrs. Claus. A cast of holiday-themed characters will move through the streets to entertain guests, with the holiday couple accepting visitors up until 8:15 p.m. If you child has a special gift request this year, then this is their opportunity to share it with the big man in red.
A Free Movie
The classic television broadcast of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is played as a free screening during this event at the Varsity Theater on 2nd Street. Show time are 6, 6:40, and 7:20 p.m. Outside of the theatre, the Grace Valley Carolers perform from 6:30 to 8 that evening.
Carriages and snowy weather are a common holiday theme, which is why Browman Development has sponsored free rides at the front curb of the Armadillo Music building on F Street. You can hop in a horse-drawn carriage from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with rides departing every ten minutes. Whether you want to impress your date or watch your children’s eyes light up as they ride through the illuminated streets, this is one attraction you won’t want to miss.
Davis Downtown is bringing back their Window Decorating Contest for the 7th year in a row. Participating business will decorate their windows with holiday-themed trinkets, lights, and more as the public casts their votes for the best-dressed store. Competition is friendly yet fierce, which leads to some extravagant displays.
The Tahoe Photo Bus Booth outside of the Armadillo Music building is ready and waiting to take the perfect holiday picture of you and your family. This retro Volkswagen van comes complete with props and lighting. Best of all, it’s entirely free.
The Ugly Sweater Contest
Go ahead, bust out the ugliest sweater you own. If you think your choice in winter apparel has what it takes to beat the competition, then make your way to the Entertainment Stage at 6:40 p.m. Prizes are awarded by Downtown Davis.
A Chance to Give
Get in the spirit of the season by visiting Toys for Tots at the Davis Chamber of Commerce. The drop off accepts any new, unwrapped toys as well as donations to the non-profit organization. If you aren’t in the holiday mood just yet, giving a child a gift they otherwise wouldn’t have is sure to lift your spirits.
